Charles Willson Peale
1741-1827 Painter and museum founder. After serving as a saddler's apprentice in Annapolis, MD, from 1754 to 1761, he worked at various trades, including painting signs and portraits. In 1766 some prominent Marylanders underwrote his studies in London with Benjamin West, from whom he absorbed the fundamentals of the British portrait tradition. Peale probably attended the informal life classes offered at St Martin's Lane Academy, precursor to the Royal Academy Schools, and drew from casts in the Duke of Richmond's collection in Whitehall. He visited the studios of such important British portrait painters as Joshua Reynolds, Francis Cotes and Allan Ramsay and studied the techniques of miniature painting, sculpture and engraving. BARBARI, Jacopo de
Italian Early Renaissance Painter, ca.1440-1515 Italian painter and printmaker. He was the first Italian Renaissance artist of note who travelled to the courts of Germany and the Netherlands. His earliest known works appear to date from the late 1490s, suggesting that he was born c. 1460-70. The birthdate of c. 1440 traditionally assigned to him reflects the misinterpretation of a document of 1512 in which his patron, Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Netherlands, awarded him a stipend because of his 'weakness and old age'. In fact, at this date a man could be described as 'old' while in his fifties or even younger.
Marco Ricci
(5 June 1676 - 1730) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was the nephew of Sebastiano Ricci. After receiving his first instruction in art from his uncle, he visited Rome, where he was for some years occupied in drawing vedute. Ricci was born at Belluno. In 1710 he came to England with his uncle, and his vedute of ruins and architecture (capricci) found many patrons. Marco Ricci etched several plates from his own designs, consisting of views and landscapes, with ruins and figures, including a set of twenty-three prints, entitled Varia Marci Ricci Pictoris priestantissimi experimenta ab ipsomet auctore inventa, delineata atque incisa, et a me Carolo Orsolini Veneto incisore in unum collecta, c. Anno 1730, Venetiis. He died in Venice.
